Join SHRM’s A-Team!

As discussed at the Volunteer Leaders’ Business Meeting (VLBM) earlier this month, SHRM is actively working to expand the reach of its workplace advocacy. Working together, we can confidently speak to policymakers on issues that impact our workplaces every day.

SHRM is holding a contest to see which state can enlist the largest number of A-Team members between now and the end of the year. The top three states that recruit the greatest percentage of A-Team members in 2019 will receive a visit from a member of the SHRM Government Affairs team in 2020 for their state council’s legislative conference.

Please take a momet to sign up for the A-Team here. SHRM’s Member Advocacy team will be sending out periodic emails with your state’s position in the standings and we are looking forward to a competitive race that will conclude at year’s end.

At VLBM, SHRM also shared its newest event: Advocacy@Work, a two-day immersive training and practical experience for attendees to learn how to use their voice to change workplace public policy at the national, state, and local levels. This event will not only provide members insight into workplace public policy, but also how to use persuasive storytelling to impact change in their organizations.

The cost to SHRM members before January 24th is $850, but the first 250 A-Team members are eligible for a $250 stipend to be used toward travel costs. We encourage each chapter to send their legislative director or an alternate. Invest in yourself, invest in your local members, register now for Advocacy@Work.

If you have any questions regarding the A-Team or Advocacy@Work, please reach out to Bailey Yeager at bailey.yeager@shrm.org.

Open Office: The Latest Management Fad to Fail
By Liz Gutierrez
Like most ideas, it began with the best of intentions: to eliminate the physical walls that divided the workforce; to free employees from cage-like cubicles, ridding them of the perception of corporate solitary confinement; and, ultimately, to promote cross-functional collaboration.

By Leigh Medina, SHRM-SCP, PHR
Running the human resources function of a business as a department of one can be challenging, let alone do so effectively. Attention gets pulled in many directions, and it can be tough to determine what to prioritize and how to tackle the tasks at hand.
