Each year, HR Florida opens a statewide nomination process to identify the HR professional deserving of being recognized as HR Florida’s prestigious HR Professional of the Year. This year, we partnered with Fisher Phillips to provide this award to our outstanding HR professional. Candice Pinares Baez of Fisher Philips (partner in the Fort Lauderdale office) presented the award to Mark Codd, our 2018 recipient. We are thrilled to recognize and celebrate Codd as HR Florida’s 2018 winner!

There are few who maintain such a high level of passion and commitment to the HR profession as Codd. His own career success is represented in both his volunteerism and his career trajectory. Codd works for an organization with nearly 200,000 employees, with only one person between him and the CEO. He is responsible for the development of all workplace surveys and assessments and various efforts for workplace improvements. Codd is a generalist having at different points in his career been a specialist in each HR functional area. He is a continuous learner and recently completed five years of doctoral studies and passed his comprehensive exams in organizational conflict at Nova Southeastern University. At nights and on weekends he is working on his doctoral dissertation and anticipates a spring 2019 completion. Codd has been a member and volunteer leader of SHRM since 1982, beginning with his presidency of the University of Texas at San Antoni (UTSA) SHRM student chapter (ASPA at the time). He continued his volunteerism in the San Antonio Texas 400-member SHRM practitioner chapter and eventually served as their president. He later moved to Houston Texas where he again served as a volunteer committee member on the Board of Directors for the Houston human resources management association.

In 1998, Codd moved to Florida and began attending and volunteering in the Mid Florida SHRM chapter within the first month of his arrival. This began a near 20 years of direct volunteerism to the chapter. Codd was the first two-time elected president of the chapter and either he or a member of his direct staff have served near continuously since 1998. This year, Codd’s volunteerism resulted in the chapter’s very first ever Pinnacle Award upon his creation of a course in labor relations and teaching a Master’s level class to all chapter members (essentially free to members). In 2018, Codd was selected by SHRM National to be a part of their labor relations expert panel where he volunteered his expertise to benefit all SHRM members. Among his most prized professional moments were (a) briefing Valerie Jarret's staff (advisor to the President) inside the White House on the proposed impact of EFCA, and (b) the opportunity to travel one on one with his CEO Ed Crenshaw.

Codd’s passion for the profession is impeccable and his desire to serve and give back to the HR community has been impactful and inspiring to many. We are thrilled to celebrate Codd as HR Florida’s 2018 HR Professional of the Year!
