THE HR FLORIDA STATE COUNCIL IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE recipient of its 2017 President’s Award – Tom Topping, SHRM-CP, PHR. Each year, the HR Florida State Council identifies one exemplary chapter president who has significantly impacted the performance of their chapter by leading with a combination of compassion, creativity and innovation.
During 2017, Topping achieved exemplary results for the Suncoast chapter.
For several years, the chapter hosted an annual conference for human resources professionals. Although professionally run by dedicated chapter members and well-received by attendees, the conference was not profitable. Over time, fewer board members and volunteers showed an interest in conference planning, which resulted in more work for fewer people. As president, Topping took it upon himself to reinvent the conference and decided to focus on one area of importance in HR: legal.

Under Topping’s direct leadership, the chapter hosted the conference at a local business where attendees were given a tour of the facility by the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO), which concluded with a social event to discuss the day’s activities and foster a deep discussion around the legal aspects of HR. Not only was this conference financially successful, but it resulted in new members joining the chapter – a testament to the event’s ability to speak to the value of being directly involved with the HR Florida State Council.
“I am delighted, humbled and honored to receive the HR Florida State Council President’s Award – it is an honor I will always cherish. I would like to thank the executive council for considering me and all of the other incredibly talented and deserving nominees,” said Tom Topping. “This is certainly not an individual award, but a distinction bestowed upon a group of hardworking professionals who believed in a leader and a mission. I will always be grateful to the 2017 Suncoast HR Board of Directors as well as the Suncoast chapter at-large for their multifarious contributions over the past year – it has been such a privilege and pleasure to serve with you.”
Additionally, Topping championed certification among chapter members. He influenced many who did not embrace the changes with certification options, helped negotiate rates with local colleges for both members and non-members for the certification class as well as positively influenced the overall adoption rates and engagement.
