Chapters Gather at HR Florida Leadership Conference

Written by Kara Palmer Smith, Public Relations Director
More than 325 volunteer chapter leaders traveled to Orlando for the HR Florida Leadership Conference on Saturday, January 11th. Conferees represented their respective chapters by wearing logoed shirts and sitting together during the general sessions.

The morning general session began at 8 am, and it laid the foundation for the day ahead. The keynote speaker was Jon Petz, author of Boring Meetings Suck. Mr. Petz captured the attendees’ attention with a game show format that involved audience participation. He shared stories of helping people succeed through magic and simple “tricks.” His question, “What’s your seven of hearts?” challenged participants to focus on the purpose behind what they do.

Concluding the morning session, Petz held a book signing. Conferees were then divided into various sessions. A total of eight breakout sessions were presented along with specific chapter breakouts. Sessions were specific to president, president-elect, treasure and all other officer and committee chair positions.

Sam Slay chaired the conference “E3 Leadership: Engage, Experience and Elevate.” This 21st annual Leadership Conference featured a brand new format designed to better provide educational opportunities for all levels of chapter leaders. This year Joyce Chastain presented all-day sessions for the seasoned volunteer leaders.

By the end of the day, it appeared that attendees were satisfied with the level of information provided.

“The leadership conference was excellent,” said Tammie Eldred, President-Elect, Big Bend SHRM. “I returned home excited and ready to share this information with my fellow board members. This conference provided a boost of energy to get our chapter leaders off to a great start for 2014.”
